Reliable solutions for the food processing industry

Heat processes, surface disinfection and light analyses for your application

Food Processing with IR

Fill yoghurt germ-free, make bread last longer, sterilize bottles and lids, process chocolate and analyze all ingredients carefully – our specialty light sources support your application.

The numerous applications in the food industry have one thing in common: Hygienic and gentle processing have the highest priority.

Intense UV light for industrial food processing

UV Disinfection

Reliable surface disinfection of packaging materials and conveyors with UV light

Protection against contamination is the top priority in food production, therefore, pathogens must be completely removed. This can be achieved by ultraviolet light – in a very environmentally-friendly way without the addition of chemicals or costly cleaning processes.

Efficient reduction of grease and odors

The use of grease and oil, particularly in commercial kitchens and industrial food processing steps, causes unpleasant odors and deposits. Grease deposits in canopies and exhausts are a major fire hazard as grease separators catch only up to 95 % of the grease in the exhaust air. The rest of the grease is precipitated in the hood body and the exhaust air duct. Special UV light photolyzes, destroys and neutralizes the molecules of greases and odors and keeps air and exhaust duct clean.

Chemical-free industrial water treatment

Chlorine products in food or water affect taste and are detrimental to the environment. Contaminated water can be treated with high-energy UV radiation without adding chemicals such as chlorine or ozone. Disinfection and advanced oxidation are two methods that can be used to treat water.

Flash Disinfection

Flash Disinfection

Certain applications in the food and beverage industry, such as packaging and bottling, require a high level of disinfection in a short period of time, typically in a fraction of a second.

The light released from Xenon Flash lamps are able to destroy bacteria and other microorganisms effectively through thermal disintegration and DNA modification. The high intensity that is possible with Xenon Flash lamps mean that the disinfection process can be carried out in a short period of time, as required by the industry. Consequently, the short disinfection time means that the substrate temperature remains cold, and thus the substrate remains unaffected.

Reliable heat processes with infrared radiation

Food processing with IR

Processing chocolate, filling candies, pre-browning instant meals or heating surfaces of foods: exact temperatures that avoid overheating of the food are required in the food processing industry. Infrared emitters transmit heat without contact and only as long as necessary.

Examples of applications for infrared heat:

  • Preheats molds or melting rims during the production of shaped or filled chocolate products
  • Browning of ready meals
  • Browns desserts, biscuits or cake: IR heat makes it easier to crush almonds, caramelize sugar and gives cheesecake an appealing color
  • Reduces germs on bread surfaces prior to packing for longer shelf life
  • Improves taste by browning ham or frying hamburgers
  • Reduces germs and dries bakery tools

Light sources for precise light analysis

Light sources for analysis in food processing industry

In modern food processing industry, a range of additives help extend a product‘s shelf life. Sugar and salt levels are controlled to prevent obesity and heart disease. Trace elements or contaminants are determined to make food healthier and easier to digest. Heraeus Deuterium, tungsten or hollow cathode lamps are used for analytical techniques like high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV / VIS and atomic absorption spectroscopy to detect contamination of food.
